SOLUTIONS FOR ANXIETY AND
Through her work with these clients, and informed by the critical research of other leaders in the field, Katie developed a series of charts and visual tools to use as she created and led social, emotional skills groups for children with special needs. This toolkit became the foundation for her first book, Motivate, which is written with the goal of helping all children gain the emotional and behavioral skills.
TOOLS FOR FOCUS AND SENSORY INTEGRATION
"As a social worker, I found pictures to have a unique and beautiful way of teaching and nurturing children to use their creativity. Anxiety and stress is high in children with ADHD, ADD and other learning disabilities due to the pressure to succeed and difficulty in regulating their own sensory environment. As a parent, I wanted to motivate and inspire my own son to use his creativity to grow and learn. It’s clear that anxiety interferes with motivation and can make children feel hopeless in the face of new learning.
Paying attention to one positive picture or listening to a story helps children focus on the present moment. Focusing on the present moves children away from anxious thoughts and insulates them from stress. Words that focus on effort helps restore children’s hope in themselves as learners."
